CAPS RESEARCH APPRENTICE:

The Center for Access and Postsecondary Success (CAPS) houses a hands-on shadowing opportunity for 1st and 2nd year students to learn more about being in a research environment to be fully prepared to be an undergraduate researcher. This opportunity is known as CAPS Research Apprentice.

 

Students commit to:

  • shadowing 2 – 4 hours weekly with a STEM research group (the CAPS Research office will work with you to find the ideal faculty mentor match)
  • unlimited access to holistic advising from the Director and peer mentors regarding project progress and balance with academics and college life
  • professional development during a weekly UNIV 1820 on Friday mornings to be prepared to be an independent undergraduate researcher and learn about graduate degrees across STEM fields.

To be eligible, students must be able to select either ABD, ABCD, or CD:

A. I am a first-generation college student, meaning neither parent graduated from 4-year college.

B. My family meets Federal TRIO income guidelines.

C. I am from a racial or ethnic group that is underrepresented in PhD Programs.

D. I am currently a 1st or 2nd year student (by credit) enrolled in an undergraduate baccalaureate program at the University of Connecticut at Storrs and have at least 4 semesters of undergraduate study remaining when participating as an Apprentice in the fall.

The Writing Center is looking for undergraduate candidates to join our tutoring staff for positions that begin in Fall 2024. Students from all majors are encouraged to apply.

The typical commitment runs from 6 to 10 hours a week, and pay begins at $16/hr.

The strongest applicants will be good writers with curiosity, a sense of engagement and activism, and excellent all-around communication skills. It’s a position that also looks great on resumes and graduate school applications.
