Welcome Back Dinner
One of the Center’s most anticipated signature programs, the Welcome Back Dinner is a staple of the fall semester. Held in September, the dinner welcomes new and returning students, faculty, staff and community members to celebrate the beginning of another academic year at the University of Connecticut. The Welcome Back Dinner has also been used as a space to mark the passing of notable members of the African American community, and to honor the memories of those lost in tragic events.
Kwanzaa Celebration
Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African holiday which celebrates family, community and culture. At the close of the fall semester the African American Cultural Center sponsors the traditional feast and lighting of the kinara as a part of a Kwanzaa celebration for the entire campus to enjoy.
Black History Month
For the entire month of February the Center works especially hard to celebrate African American legacy and culture through various lectures, workshops, exhibits, and artistic symposiums. The Black History Month Opening and Closing Ceremonies are among the Center’s signature programs and represent just a small portion of the events of the month. In addition, the organizations affiliated with the AACC also take part in the programming with student-run events and cultural shows.
